5 Sitting Positions You Can Use During Meditation

Many people think that one must sit cross-legged to achieve the ideal meditation position. The reality is that you can meditate in any position if you are comfortable. Meditation is not one-size-fits-all and there are hundreds of variations and techniques you can choose from, hence there is no reason for you to have to stick to one sitting position if you are uncomfortable.

Meditation can be done anywhere, anytime, but bear in mind that a first timer or even a regular practitioner should stay flexible when meditating. The key is creating a practice that works and suits you. And as time goes by, you’ll be able to modify and adjust your practice. Tip 1. In a Chair

Sitting in a chair makes it easier for most people to sit for longer. You can sit up straight toward the edge of your seat or use the back portion of the chair for support. Either way, is good as long as your'e comfortable and at ease . As you apply this type of sitting position in meditating, always be conscious of your spine alignment, and we suggest you use our meditation cushion which can provide more comfort when sitting in a chair for meditation, as it brings your hips slightly over the knees so you’re well-stacked and supported. 

 

 

 

Tip 2. Against a Wall


If you believe that the wall in your house has no use in your meditation process well think again! You can certainly use that sturdy wall you have in your house to aid your meditation practice. You can sit cross-legged while sitting up straight or extend your legs in front of you. Many of our customers find the most comfort sitting our meditation cushion set pushed against the wall for additional support. 

 

Tip 3. Kneeling with support

Kneeling while meditating is a favorite position for many. But, kneeling without support puts excess pressure on the knees. Use zafu cushion, a rolled-up blanket, or a yoga block, and position either right between the knees and under your buttocks for needed support. Using your zabuton under the knees can provide additional support. 

 

Tip 4. Lying Down


It is much easier to relax and release tension if you lie down with support. An ideal lying down meditation position is to lie on your back while extending your arms alongside your body. The feet should also be a hip-distance apart while the toes can be turned out to the side.

 

Tip 5. Standing Meditation


One easy way to meditate is to stand, but only if you are comfortable. But this position can be surprisingly comfortable. To do use this, shift your feet so that your heels turn slightly inward and your toe pointing slightly away from each other.  Proceed to use you preferred meditation technique while paying attention to your stance.
